I was looking for a tool to trim some base molding without having to remove all of the molding and replace it with a new piece. This tool has been wonderful and I have already found it to be useful on other projects where I need to trim in tight places. On every project I work on there seems to be something where I can use the Dremel MultiMax and it saves me time and headache. I purchased the factory reconditioned one and I haven't had any problems with it, there is a 2 year factory warranty if something does go wrong. This was a steal for the price and all the work it can do, I would highly recommend this tool to everyone. Very easy to use!

Generally Dremel turns out great tools but this one doesn't measure up. It took 45 minutes to cut through a five inch line of fiber composition board after which the blade was dull. Then I tried sanding the area smooth with the sanding attachment, but the rubber mounting attachment soon developed wear marks on the edges.

I knew about oscillating multi-tools but so far hadn't needed one. I'm a bit leery about just buying tools on a whim because sometimes I've found that they really don't make things easier or save time.



This spring I had a small DIY project in my kitchen which included cleanly removing sections of existing base & crown moulding without marring the floor, walls or ceiling. I first wanted to see how long it would take me to do it with the tools I had and learned that it was quite tedious & difficult if I wanted to be neat and even with care, the adjacent moulding got a few chips/scratches/cracks and the drywall got gouged.



So I decided to order this reconditioned Dremel Multi-Max and work on a different part of the project in the meantime. I've had good luck with reconditioned tools so I figured it was worth the gamble. One thing that swayed me toward the Dremel over the other brands was that replacement blades could be easily had from the local big-box stores. It arrived on time (I'm cheap and went with the slowest shipping). Opening it up, I found a complete set. The blades were obviously new and the Multi-Max looked new too even though it must have been used at one time in order to have been reconditioned.



I spent a few minutes testing the Multi-Max on scrap and then tackled the moulding. "Whir whir whir" (change the angle of the blade)"whir whir whir pop" (cat's paw action) and the first piece was out. Not only was it insanely easy & quick but the results were a big improvement over my earlier attempts by hand: the cuts were sharp & clean and the adjacent moulding/walls/floor/ceiling were unmarred. I was able to remove all the other sections just as quickly.



I suspect this thing will be handy for a few upcoming projects (repairing sections of our old hardwood floor and the biggy: upgrading our garage interior). The Multi-max is great for fiddly work - that is making neat precise cuts in awkward places.

This is a great tool and getting a refurbished one saves a ton of money. If you are hesitating purchase of this refurbed, then go ahead and spend 50% more money. You will get the very same thing, except yours won't be looked at TWICE by a human. The choice is yours. Pay more and get the same or pay less and get the same. No brainer to me.

Use it constantly for landscape construction layouts. Very easy to use and very accurate. Best with two people if you have lots of distances to measure, but the main unit works very well by itself if you have a smooth reflecting surface to bounce off. Doesn't use light so bright sunlight isn't a problem.

I bought this for a Realtor also, and LOVES it!! Certianly a ++ over walking tape all over the place.
This measurer is easy to use, just a few buttons do all the business. Even came with "cheater" stickers to place on the units, so you don't have to bust out the instructions. Certainly not precision accuracy to do carpentry work, but within 1-2" usually which is enough to estimate room sizes, yard lines, or do sq.ft. measurements for paint, drywall, etc. projects around the house. The remote is easy to target, and gives a fast flashing green light when you hit it. Don't need the target inside of 60', but we found using it incresed the accuracy. The only way to improve this is if it had a laser sight. (Again, don't really need it, but wouldn't that be *cool* ??)
We had to calibrate the unit for high altitude, but the instructions are surprisingly easy & no trouble at all!
All in all, well worth the $$$$.!!

I purchased this for a friend who is a Realtor. It couldn't be more simple to measure a room and is very accurate. The unit is simple to use, you get the measure of a distance by simply pressing a single button. I needed to cut the end of a bolt and thought this "metal" blade would do the job. When I ruined the blade, I noticed on the package that it was designed for non-ferrous metals. If you want to cut aluminum foil, this is your blade. If you want to cut anything hard, you will need to find another tool or blade.

One day I decided to try & cut a paneling nail into, a spiral 1/8 thick nail into,

& a screw into. The quickest to be cut into was the paneling nail & the screw took a little longer. The spiral nail took the longest to cut into; but it actually did it & the blade was able to cut pine wood afterwards. However, it did dull the blade when you compare a new blade against the one I had used to cut the nails & the screw into. I think a reciprocating saw would be cheaper & better suited to cut the big nails with!

First off I love tools and have quite a collection, but they have to be reliable. I bought this maybe a few years ago and have used it only a handful of times and I just burned out the second one. The first one stopped working while doing some light routing work on some pine, which is a soft wood. I sent it to the company, who replaced it for free, and just burned out the second one after using it probably two or three times. Most recently it was used to cut off a stripped screw, that's what killed it, a screw. Anyway, I'm very disappointed and would not recommend this tool, or really any other Dremel. I suppose there's always Rotozip.

Bought the tool a couple years ago from home depot. Tried to use it to smooth out some cuts I made on melamine laminated particle board, and the motor burned up after about 15 minutes of use. I didn't even bother sending it back since it was obviously a design flaw that wouldn't be fixed by getting another of the same model. This tool is junk.

I've worked this thing pretty hard a few times, perhaps a bit too much for it's size, I don't recommend using it for cutting through tile grout, at least not more than a few inches worth. For all my small hobby cutting/grinding tool needs it works ok.

I am going to echo what many others have said. I have used my 400 xpr reasonably for a year maybe once a month. Today I was cutting with it, making sure the vents were clear because I know it can get warm, when it started making an arc welding type of noise and smoke began spewing out. I stopped it and although it was not hot at all, I waited a bit and tried again. It went click, click zap, zap, zap and began smoking like rubber in a bonfire. Fortunately I was out in my shed with lots of ventilation. I am disappointed in this Dremel product. I will try a different brand from now on.

This is a follow up review(01/19/2010) of Dremel 400-6/90 series XPR. I couldn't be more happier with the product, I am satisfied with the purchase. The tools has so many functions. I could do a lot of projects around the home with the set alone. Without having to buy too many different tools.

I would not view this as a con; the heat exhaust design, could traps debris, particles, or dusts etc. But I invest in Dust Remover (for cleaning keyboard or pc). Helps to keep the tool clean.
